O'neill Opens it's Flagship Store
La Jolla Group announced that the company is opening the doors to its first O’Neill Clothing flagship store, located in Anaheim, California’s GardenWalk shopping district. The 3,350 square foot store features the latest collection of O’Neill clothing, footwear, accessory, and wetsuits.
The company hired our good friends at Verdego Design to outfit the interior of the store, which incorporates several interesting design elements. Verdego Co-founders Tatiana Barhar and Sarai Grenell have worked with several companies in the industry including Quiksilver, Vans, DC, Reef, and Stüssy. According to O’Neill, the company used ecologically friendly materials through out the store.
The cash wrap is centrally located and O’Neill is calling the area surrounding it “The Hut” because it draws cues from Jack O’Neill’s original shop in Santa Cruz.
O’Neill had another area of the store called “The Wave Wall” designed to capture the surf essence of the brand. The idea is to give shoppers the feeling of standing under a peeling wave. The “Wave Wall” is backed by a large underwater image of a kelp forest, which the company says supports the ideals of
the Jack O’Neill Sea Odyssey and underwater education programs.
Aside from aesthetically appealing features—like lamps made from thousands of drinking straws that embody sea urchins, and a cash wrap covered in hand painted O’Neill images—the store is built to function as an efficient retail environment.
Coolest feature? The fitting rooms feature walls and cushions that are made of O’Neill neoprene wetsuit material.

Surfing vs. the Senate by Jesse Ventura
There was a lot of talk this week about former Pro Wrestler turned Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura running for the U.S. Senate. He squashed these rumors yesterday by saying:
“My decision came down to surfing vs. the Senate, and I found surfing to be much more honorable than the Senate,” Ventura said.

True Norwegian Black Metal
If you’re into photography and scary music, then Peter Beste’s new book called True Norwegian Black Metal is for you. I had a chance to check it out the other day, and the images are absolutely incredible.
The book has 126 Norwegian Black Metal Photographs; An Introduction by Metalion of Slayer Magazine; Essays by Editor Johan Kugelberg and Peter Beste; 3 Panel foldout black metal time line by Tara G Warrior; 32 page section of old black metal ephemera including rare and obscure photographs, flyers, letters, and interviews.
But If you’re really interested, then the real score is the deluxe limited edition of the book you can order off the website.
It is an edition of 666 (of course), and includes:
A hand numbered silkscreened slipcase (measuring 11.25” x 14.25”), a 20×26” silkscreened black metal logo poster, and a signed 8×10 original Peter Beste print, and If I had $225 to my name, I would definitely buy it.

Monster Children
While I was in Australia I was finally able to pick up a copy of Monster Children Magazine, and it’s really nice. Both the design and content of the magazine are a refreshing change from the standard “action sports” mag format. It’s a little more like Lowdown. Unfortunately, a subscription here in the U.S. will run you about $100 a year for 4 issues (ouch), so you might just want to check out their blog instead if you’re poor, but it’s not nearly as cool as the magazine itself.

Beach Blanket Burnout
The premieres for Alex Knost & Tyler Manson’s Beach Blanket Burnout start this week.
About the Film:
Buster Olson (aka Alex Knost) plays a disaffected beach bum amongst the once-was surfing subculture. Amidst the growing crowds he struggles to find shelter from his existential dread. Shot entirely on location in Australia, the film embodies surfing’s vagabond ideals and contrasts today’s mundane energy and over-consumed ideology.

Billabong Pro J-Bay
The Billabong Pro at J-Bay starts this Thursday the 10th, so make sure to get your Fantasy Surfer team locked-in. The heat draw is now up right here. The wildcards aren’t set yet, that will be decided by the results of the Von Zipper Trials right before the event.
Unfortunately for us in California, this is the contest that doesn’t start until around 11p.m. PST, and since I’m old and usually in bed by then, it makes it kind of a bummer. Hopefully they will have the “Heats on Demand” system working.
