Done Searching?
Well judging by the message board chatter, it seems like it is all but publicly announced that The Rip Curl Pro Search contest is landing at Uluwatu this year.
If that is the case, who do you think that favorites are?
If Rizal gets a wildcard, is there any reason he should lose? He owns that place.
Is Uluwatu really “searching”? It’s not exactly an unknown location.
Thoughts?

River Thames Secret Spot
Speaking of London, check out this photo I got of a secret reeling left point break inside the River Thames
This looks like it’s got way more potential than the forthcoming London Wave Pool.

The Book of Surfing
From the creators of the September Project, Stranger magazine and cult freesports mag Adrenalin comes 288 pages of illustrated loveliness on surf culture. Representing the work of some of the greatest lensmen, pensmen and artists ever to train their sensibilities on the beautifully meaningless act of riding a wave, The Book of Surfing is a tempestuous, full color celebration of the surfing life.
The roll call of contributors include: Thomas Campbell, LeRoy Grannis, Albe Falzon, Ron Church, Art Brewer, Jeff Divine and Rick Griffin – and there’s everything from an ode to the feral surfer, an anatomy of surf wagons, sketches of the influence of surf music and the surf T-shirt to riffs on Dora, Curren and Tudor. Hipping the legions of the newly stoked to the breadth and depths of surf culture as well as keeping the old salts smiling, the whole package lands as the 21st century’s coolest guide to surf-culture, like, ever.
I had a chance to check out this book the other day while I was in London the other day shopping at Harrods (‘cause that’s how I roll), and it’s actually really nice. It’s hard for me to get excited about surf books these days (we’ve seen a lot of bad ones flood the market in the past few years), but this one is really well put together and interesting. Job well done by Michael Fordham and his crew.

Bu' Boys
Forget all you’ve heard about The Bra Boys, The ‘Bu Boys are the new surf gang in town, and they “like to fuckin’ drink and party, wooooohoooo!!!”, so if I were you, I’d stay away from Pt. Dume.
A few Paparazzi got their asses beat when they were trying to film Surfer Dude Matthew McConaughey this weekend surfing (well… paddling with his chest on the board like a beginner) at Little Dume. TMZ is trying to spin it to sound like they were protecting McConaughey, but we all know that they were really protecting the privacy of the break, not the dreamy, muscle ridden star.
Personally, I love it when these guys get in fights. Although what they do is not technically “against the law”, it’s a total invasion of privacy, and shows a complete disrespect for some basic human needs. I think they deserve every beating they get.

Slipoffs
This girl Shauna Luedtke makes one-of-a-kind hand painted Vans. They’re pretty cool. I think at $180, they’re a little expensive, but then when you consider it takes her 5-10 hours to do each pair, and then you subtract the $60 for the cost of the shoes themselves, I think that means she ends up making about $3 an hour if my math is correct. If you’re not totally sick of the Vans resurgence like I am, then this isn’t a bad deal for you if you want some custom kicks.
Then you can be totally trendy, but a little different.

And Speaking of Drugs
I normally don’t care much about this stuff, but I thought this was particularly funny:
Former Broadcom CEO, CFO Plead Not Guilty
Broadcom co-founder Henry Nicholas III pleaded not guilty Monday to federal drug and securities fraud charges.
Nicholas entered the pleas before a judge in Santa Ana, Calif. Former Broadcom chief financial officer William J. Ruehle also pleaded not guilty to securities fraud.
Last month, securities regulators filed a civil suit alleging that Nicholas, Ruehle, company co-founder Henry Samueli and general counsel David Dull falsified Broadcom’s reported income, leading to what is believed to be the largest-ever accounting restatement related to backdating stock options.
The SEC said Broadcom had to restate its financial results in January 2007 because of the scheme and reported more than $2 billion in compensation expenses it had not accounted for.
Nicholas is also accused of stockpiling cocaine, methamphetamine and ecstasy. He allegedly used ecstasy to spike the drinks of business associates. Prosecutors said the former CEO once smoked so much marijuana on a private plane that the pilot was forced to put on an oxygen mask.
The case is set for trial on July 29.
