The July 2008 Issue of HIGH TIMES Magazine features an article by Editor-in-Chief Steven Hager on the history of surfing and smuggling. The issue also includes an interview with the legendary Capt. Zero by Dave Bienenstock.

Here’s a video preview of the story from the HIGH TIMES POTCAST

Stalking Mick Fanning

Our travels down under are coming to an end, the Daily Drop will be back to normal on Monday. I’ll be sure to give a full report on the Kiwi/Oz experience.

In the meantime, we’re spending our time on The Goldie stalking Mick Fanning. Or maybe he’s stalking me. He seems to show up every time I’ve surfed D-Bah on this trip. I know it’s fun to watch me surf, but come on Mick, this is getting a little weird.

Actually, I’ve had the pleasure of being in the water with Mick, Occy, Rabbit, and Parko on multiple sessions now here, and it’s been great to see these guys in their natural environment. Ripping. I even saw Occy do a backside air.

Except you Parko! You’ve blatantly snaked me twice so far. I know… it’s your spot and I’m the Seppo, but you’ve stuffed me twice on two of the best waves of my trip, so it still kind of sucks. But then again, I guess it’s more fun to get burned by you then one of those other randoms out there. Just so you know though, you’re off my fantasy team forever.

New Zealand

Sorry for the spotty updates, we’re currently traveling/surfing New Zealand, and internet service isn’t as widespread here as we thought it would be.

Regardless, as you can tell from the photo of Raglan above (taken yesterday), we’re scoring, so you’re just going to have to wait for The Daily Drop to become “daily” again.

I’ve always wanted to check out New Zealand, and so far, it’s everything I was hoping it would be. Incredibly beautiful, uncrowded, super-friendly people, and amazing surf. I always heard that “there are more sheep in New Zealand than people”, so I thought I was prepared for it, but I can’t believe how many sheep there are here. They’re everywhere. Fluffy white dots lining every green hill on the island.

Please keep checking back for more updates.

Terry Richardson Photographs Some Real Jackasses

I really like most of Terry Richardson’s Photography, although some of it is a little too much for me. If you don’t know his name, you definitely have seen his work. He shoots a lot of the American Apparel ads, and the new Tom Ford ads*, and a lot more that you’ve seen.

Check out his new series of Jackass photos. They’re pretty cool

Surfer Found Dead Off the Channel Islands

Authorities have found the body of a 43-year-old San Diego man who disappeared while surfing with friends off Santa Cruz Island.

John M. Wagner was found dead in the water about 20 miles south of Ventura Harbor on Friday, the Ventura County coroner’s office said.

While surfing a break on the island with friends, Wagner went underwater for unknown reasons about 5 p.m., according to a Coast Guard official. The island is part of the Channel Islands National Park, and it was park rangers who found his body.

The autopsy will be conducted in Santa Barbara County where the death occurred.

The cause of death is unknown. Internet chatter on the SURFERmag.com message board suggests Wagner’s death may have been from a head injury. The area is known for its shallow, rocky conditions. No official word on the cause of death has been given at this time.

NIN - The Slip

Check it out. You can download the new Nine Inch Nails album for FREE. And unlike the last free NIN album we told you about, this one actually has vocals.

It’s amazing how fast Trent is kicking out albums. Making brilliant noise seems pretty easy for him at this point.

Nike 6.0 Lowers

The Nike 6.0 Lowers contest is on again today. There was some great action yesterday, and the swell is a little bit bigger today (sets look like SO much fun!), so there should be a lot of shredding going on.

Check it out live right now:

Korn Auditions Their New Drummer

If you’ve ever wondered how a band like Korn auditions a new drummer, well, this is how.

Looks like this guy Ray Luzier beats the shit out of the skins, and in a recent interview, original Korn member and funky bass player “Fieldy” says “[Luzier is] my favorite drummer I’ve ever played with.” Which is a pretty big claim considering Joey Jordison (Slipknot’s incredible drummer) held the position last.
