Ed Templeton: Map of the Inner War
For Map of the Inner War, Ed Templeton saturates the gallery with over 250 new works including painting, sculpture, photography, and works on paper. Templeton documents his life, and the lives of the people around him, in a rich stream of images – images of himself and his wife, Deanna, in their day-to-day lives, and images of others, at home in Orange County, California or during the many tours he makes as pro-skateboarder and artist.
Templeton likes to present his photos, drawings and paintings in a non-hierarchical manner, large quantities all mixed up together at once. He’ll often hang clusters of works in the shape of “image clouds.” In these installations, the to and fro of the clouds feels like a metaphor for the appearance and disappearance of images, like those of a traveler acquiring countless new impressions every day. In Templeton’s way of seeing we also recognize something of the fascination of the passer-by, the transient, gripped, at some unexpected moment, by the “extraordinary of the ordinary,” the exceptional and surprising existential qualities of daily life. Templeton’s work has been shown at Arken Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen, Denmark, Kunsthalle Vienna, Austria, and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, England, among others. Upcoming solo exhibitions include S.M.A.K., Ghent, Belgium, and Tim Van Laere Gallery, Antwerp, Belgium (portion of text from Empty Plastic Echoes by Stijn Huijts.)
All of the pieces from this show are also featured in Ed’s new book, Deformer. I checked it out the other day, and it’s great! Dude’s talented.

Matt Leines: Matt Leines
In the past, Matt Leines created creatures and worlds seemingly in a realm of history. For this exhibition, The Great Gates of Zenith, Leines imagines a futuristic world in which his creatures dwell. The overwhelming theme of “wonder” present throughout is reminiscent of the feelings evoked by scientific advances exhibited at Worlds’ Fairs at the turn of the twentieth century, when people were not yet jaded by such discoveries, and still fascinated by what might lie over the next hill, or who may be encountered down the next alley. Consisting of all new works on paper, the exhibition will coincide with the release of Leines’ publication, You Are Forgiven (Free News Projects, 2008).
Leines has shown at the Deste Foundation Centre of Contemporary Art, Athens, Greece, the Galleri Loyal, Stockholm, Sweden, and Deitch Projects, New York.

Street Art: Lisbon
GUEST POST BY DAILY DROP READER “The Girl Next Door”:
I just got back from a trip to Portugal and was amazed at the amount of street art all over Lisbon. These graffiti laced streets are literally full of pieces, and are the home of the Museo Efermero, the first street art/ open air museum in the world. Pieces (many Banksy inspired) line neighborhoods particularly in the Barrio Alto, the hipster/ art center of Lisbon. Yes, there is controversy regarding the work. However for now, it is alive and it’s great to see street art encouraged to a point where it overwhelms the scratching that covers so many buildings. It is well worth the visit if you happen to be traveling to Portugal.
If you’d like to take a tour, or get more info about this “street art museum”, you can consult its website.

Dear & Yonder - Leftovers
If you missed the Dear & Yonder show we mentioned to you last week, you’re in luck. You can still pick up some of the artwork.
There is still an original Thomas Campbell, a Deanna Templeton photo, an Andy Davis painting, A Geoff McFetridge silkscreen, and even an original Kassia Meador!
There are some really nice pieces here, and some are pretty affordable (not the Thomas Campbell), so if your the kind of person that still has some disposable income left in this economy, maybe a good time to invest in some art.
