ASP Introducing New Format for 2009?

Just found out, thanks to Team RydrHi, that the ASP is introducing a new format next year, and it’s confusing as hell!

Big changes, but can you fully understand the new format? Am I just slow?

This was posted on the Hobgood Blog by CJ:

Dear Top 45,

After thorough investigation of the options at Technical Committee level and via the WPS, a new format was passed into law for implementation in 2009. Next year WCT events will have the choice of staying with the current format or implementing the new format. Both are 48 man fields. Quiksilver have already booked the current format for Snapper, Rip Curl are at this point undecided for Bells and Billabong have confirmed all four of their events, being Tahupoo, J/Bay, Mundaka and Pipe will run with the new format, as well as overlapping heats in some cases.

As presented at the J/Bay WPS meeting, the new format has 48 competitors, broken into two rounds. All heats are knockout man on man. The first round consists of 32 surfers, being surfers ranked 17-27 on the WCT, 3 Tour/injury wildcards, Top 15 WQS and 3 Event wildcards. The seeding formula will be exactly as it is today, with #17 seed up against #32 seed in Heat 8, #18 against #31 in Heat 9 etc. After this round it will be re-seeded for Rd 2.

The Top 16 are seeded directly into Rd 2, where they will meet the 16 winners from Rd 1 in a re-seeded draw. How it works is that the Top 10 from the previous year will be guaranteed a 2nd Rd seed all year, while the next 6 seeds have to maintain their seeded position and can be replaced by better performing back 32 surfers after the 3rd WCT event of the year. So for Snapper, Bells and Teahupoo the Top 16 will be seeded into Rd 2, although seedings can be re-shuffled according to results.

After Teahupo’o only the Top 10 from the previous year will hold their spots, which is probably a good incentive to do Brazil and Pipe, while the next 6 could be replaced if guys from the back 32 secure more seeding points. Seeding points at the beginning of the year, being double seed points going into Snapper, will remain in effect.

The Technical Committee will meet in Hawaii in the first week of December and one of the issues will be to work out how long out from the start of an event window an event must notify ASP of their intention to deploy either format.

Another work in progress is the implementation of a one world ranking system, to be implemented in 2010 at the earliest, and this will involve working out how to integrate WQS Prime events with WCT events in a points scaling system that is a true reflection of ones world ranking. But that is a future work that the Technical Committee has been directed by the Board to work up and your input is welcome.

There was a prize money increase okayed for 2009. While the events argued that putting the entire 20k into 1st place was a great marketing tool for the tour, your reps successfully argued that distributing the additional purse over the Top 4 placings, being an extra 10k for 1st, 4k for 2nd and 3k each for equal 3rd was more appropriate. We have, following the wishes of the surfers, concentrated prize money increase on the bottom tiers through several increases (last 3 years) and it was time to top up the higher end of the scale.

UPDATESurfermag and Surfing try to explain the format a bit.

Everybody Hates Brazil - Part 3 - No B.Mar

Well, it looks like Bobby Martinez isn’t going to Brazil either. On the ASP site, it just says citing illness or injuries, so I’m not sure what’s wrong with him. I’ll let you know as soon as I can find out.

In the meantime, adjust your Fantasy team, while I go adjust mine…

Everybody Hates Brazil - Part 2

Who’s Out:
The injured who will not be surfing include: Dane Reynolds with an ankle injury he suffered while doing an air in France (he ’s currently awaiting diagnosis), Dean Morrison with a tweaked pelvis, Neco Padaratz with continued back problems, Mick Fanning with a groin muscle strain, and Danny Wills with a perforated ear drum. Others who won’t be paddling out for various reasons (like hating Brazil, or being a sore loser) include: Kelly Slater, Joel Parkinson, and Andy Irons. Bruce is out on his honeymoon.

Think Taj will take the win?

POINT MUGU SURF CONTEST!!!

WOW! For the first time ever, the Navy is opening up the elusive Point Mugu surf break for a contest. And get this, it’s open to the public!

I’ve never been lucky enough to get into Mugu, but I’ve seen perfect a-framing photos like the ones above for years.

Here is some more info if you want to enter the contest, or just go check it out:

Click here for the entry form.

Southern California’s best kept secret is about to be revealed. The first ever surf contest is scheduled at Naval Base Ventura County, Point Mugu and everyone is invited. Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) surf contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25. It is open to the public to enter and to watch.

“Point Mugu is one of the best surfing spots in California so a lot of people want to come and surf on it,” Kent Blankenship, NBVC Athletics Director said. “We are encouraging the public to either participate or come out and watch.” This particular stretch of ocean at Point Mugu is such a special spot because it faces in a south direction which gives it a unique wave. “Especially when there is a south swell coming the wave breaks different and a lot bigger then a lot of different beaches along the coast here,” Blankenship said.

Todd Proctor, owner of Proctor Surfboards, agrees that Point Mugu provides a world class wave. He says everyone should come down and enjoy the ocean and socialize. “It’s a contest to bring people together,” he said. Proctor believes that a gap can form between the military and their community members. Opening Point Mugu will join two groups that both enjoy the same thing.

I've got a bad case of "The Mundaka's"

It seems like the WCT guys really don’t like Mundaka anymore. Maybe it’s just because the forecast for the contest looks horrible (almost every year), or maybe it’s just too much Paella, but now we hear that not only are the Irons Bros. (and potentially Dingo and Neco) skipping the fabled left-hander, but now White Lightning says his hip hurts, so he’s not going, and The White Fijian apparently got in a “minor” accident on a scooter and has some road rash now, so he “might” not show up. Not confirmed yet.

Ace Buchan beats Slater in the Final of the Quik Pro

Wow! Ace Buchan just beat Slater in France. I had them both on my Fantasy team (718).

That’s the first WCT win for Ace, and it keeps the World Title race alive with Slater not winning the final. Looks like Kelly will wrap it up in Spain again like he did in 2006. The waiting period for the Mundaka contest starts next Moday the 29th.
