Steph Gilmore wins Rip Curl Women's Pro

Stephanie Gilmore beat Sofia Mulanovich in the finals at Bells Beach yesterday. The waves we’re the best we’ve seen so far in the waiting period, and then the tide killed it 3 heats into round 3 of the Men’s contest.

Hopefully the guys will get the same quality waves as the ladies did yesterday. So far they’ve just had big choppy challenging stuff, and I’m ready to see some ripping.

Billabong XXL - Ride of the Year

The finalists for the 2008 Billabong XXL Global Big Wave Awards presented by Monster Energy were announced today, marking the culmination of what is likely the greatest year in big wave surfing history. After 12 months of amazing conditions from Chile to South Africa to Europe to Tahiti to Hawaii to California to Mexico, over 500 entered images were narrowed down through the votes of the surfers and photographers themselves, producing this year’s elite nominations. Video and still images of all the top rides are now available for viewing on the updated event website at BillabongXXL.com.

The winners will be announced on April 11, 2008 at the eighth-annual invitation-only awards gala at the Grove Theater in Anaheim, California before 2,000 surf world VIPs. The entire night’s festivities will be webcast live on the event website and EXPN.com and will also be the focus of a one-hour television special airing on the ESPN2 network on the evening of May 29.

I’ve been sitting here watching all of the nominees over and over again for the Wave of the Year Award, and it’s a really hard call. Dorian‘s wave is amazing the way he stalls and then gets rag-dolled at the end. Ian‘s is so white and frothy and bumpy, Carlos‘ wave at Ghost Trees is just incredibly big and clean, and the mid-face air drop negotiation of Michael Brennan at Shipstearns is pretty mind-blowing too, but I think I’m going to have to give it to Manoa. His wave is so big and clean and crazy and deep, that halfway through it looks exactly like something out of the Kelly Slater Pro Surfer video game.

What do you guys think? Who do you think should win and why?

Rip Curl Pro - Bells

This gallery is brought to you by surfingthemag.com

Contest was really good yesterday. Big sloppy challenging waves. Plenty of coverage out there if you missed it.

Also, on the contest site, you can re-watch any of the heats ON DEMAND. Which is great.

Slater in at Bells

Slater Ready to Ring the Bell at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.

Slater officially withdrew from the event late last week but had a change of heart after seeing the swell forecast for the March 18-29 waiting period. He arrived in Australia today. “A combination of things influenced my decision to come to Bells,” Slater said. “I had called ASP Tour Manager Renato Hickel to ask to be officially taken out of the event and that is when he asked me if I had seen the swell forecast.”

Current forecasts indicate that a new swell could see the event start early in the waiting period and that Easter Friday is poised to produce six to eight foot waves akin to the classic Bells Beach conditions Slater won the 2006 Rip Curl Pro in.

“I was also checking out some media online and I came across some video interviews that the Geelong Advertiser had done with the locals about whether or not I would come,” Slater said. “There were some pretty strong responses about wanting to see me there. So that, the swell and some changes in my personal life and suddenly it was perfect timing for me to get away. All the signs pointed this direction so it seemed like the thing to do.”

It seemed like the thing to do in 2006 too. Slater was in an identical predicament in the 2006 lead up to the event as he was prior to this one – a win in the season-opener, a world No. 1 rating to start the year and serious indecision about whether to attend the event or not. Slater won the Rip Curl Pro and his eighth ASP title that year.

“The decision to come was a little more clear this year,” Slater said. “In 2006 I decided to come at the last minute to get my mind off some personal things and to get a little more focused. This year, the similarities to 2006 are the excitement of a looming swell and a great week of surfing I want to be a part of.”

Slater will face Brazil’s Adriano de Souza and wildcard and former ASP World Tour surfer Troy Brooks in Heat 10.

Slater is the King

I’m not going to write much about the contest, because there’s already a shitload about it on every major surf site on the internet, but I will say that Slater really surprised me. I didn’t even have him on my Fantasy Surfer team cause I thought he was over it, but holy hell did the guy just fucking kill it. He’s really amazing. He looked so relaxed the whole time, and pulled so many air-tailslide-360 things, that it actually got a little predictable and boring.

The big questions is, will he surf the Bells contest now that he won? First he said definitely no, but now, after the win, it’s a whole different story.

For now though, all of us guys over 35 can still feel like we’re not quite over the hill yet.

Billabong Pro Mundaka Cancelled

Bobby Martinez is pretty bummed right now. The back-to-back champ won’t be able to defend his title this year, or ever. The Billabong Pro at Mundaka has been cancelled again, and this time, it looks like it’s for good. After years of bad conditions, huge tidal swings, jacked up sandbars, and unhappy competitors, the ASP has finally pulled the plug on the event in the Basque country.

No word yet if they’re going to add another event, but you can bet all of the goofyfooters on tour will be campaigning for another good left. Stay tuned for more details.
