Ecolounge
I got an email from Matt at trunq.com about a new event he’s putting on called Ecolounge that focuses on overlap between action sports & sustainable living. The first one is happening at the Arbor Snowboards headquarters in Venice next Thursday, November 20th.
That’s the same day as the Slater book signing in Santa Monica, so if you’re coming to (or live in) L.A. anyway, you can kill two action sports birds with one stone. There will be live music, beer, and a premiere of a new eco-snowboard film called My Own Two Feet.
For more info, email Matt.

Transworld Digital
We mentioned Water Magazine going digital, and now Transworld is following suit. Sort of. You can still get the print edition, but now there is also a digital subscription for $10.
“With the digital edition of TransWorld magazines you can be the first to get new issues, have archived personal account access to all your magazines from any computer any time, store your favorite articles/how to’s, and have the ease to search the entire magazine with any keyword. Not to mention, there are no international postage rates and you don’t run the risk of losing any issue.”
I checked out the free demo, and I got the spinning color wheel of death immediately, it locked up my computer for about 45 seconds, while I sat in a panic waiting to see how many of my unsaved documents I was about to lose, but then it stopped. I flipped the page, to the first ad, and got the spinning wheel again. So I closed the browser, saved all my files, and then tried again on my laptop, and the demo worked perfectly. It’s exactly like the print edition, but online, and with zooming.
I don’t know, I still like holding magazines in my hand. But if you don’t, or you’re one of those “environmentalists”, you now have another option.

Electric iPhone
I just read the story over on SHOP-EAT-SURF about Electric Visual’s new iPhone app, and I gotta give big credit to them for being ahead of the curve on this one.
I checked it out on my iPhone, and it’s a great little app that has really nice images of their Fall ’08 line, the latest news in a blog style format, their current ad campaign, and an iPhone friendly dealer locator.
From a marketing standpoint it totally makes sense. I assume every time they update their line, or ad campaign, it will just update on my phone and let me know. It’s a direct to consumer marketing device that we haven’t seen yet in this industry, and I’m sure that a lot of Creative Directors are making calls to iPhone app developers this morning.
Nice job Electric.

Print is Dead - Water Magazine Edition
Surfline is pulling the plug on Water Magazine. Actually, more like Plugging in Water Magazine. What I’m trying to say is that they’re not printing the mag anymore, and just going all digital.
I’m so divided on this issue, I definitely understand that the carbon footprint of a magazine is pretty environmentally ridiculous, but at the same time, I love magazines. I like holding them in my hand and flipping the pages so much more than sitting in front of the computer, pushing buttons, waiting for ads to load, and zooming in and out to be able to actually read the text. I find it an annoying experience.
I know that sounds a little silly coming from someone who runs a website, but I still really think that ingesting “print” and “web” are two totally different experiences for the user, and I still like having both options.
I got excited when Water showed up in the mailbox, I thought it was a really nice magazine. Oh well…
You can check out the digital version right HERE.
Of the online magazines, I do think Blackwater from Brazil does a nice job, I like the way they embed video in the ads and features, but it’s still a lot of waiting for ads to load.

Pacsun Laughs-off Adrenalina's Unsolicited Proposal
ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 21, 2008 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc. Adrenalina to buy PacSun?
According to Shop-Eat-Surf, Adrenialina just offered to buy PacSun.
I know… what? Crazy stuff going on in the economy. As far as I know, Adrenalina was launched in 2006, based on the “success” of the Adrenalina TV show. They only have 1 store in a mall in Florida (with a Flowrider in the store). PacSun has over 900 stores.
How the hell can they afford to buy the whole PacSun chain?
