Hellboy 2

I think this looks great, I hope it is. I’m not normally all that into comic book movies, but there have been a few really good ones lately (Sin City, Batman Begins, Iron Man), and Hellboy 2 looks like it’s next in line.

It’s directed by Guillermo del Toro, who’s last film was the stunning Pan’s Labrynth, and it looks like this film is going to be pretty amazing visually too.

How come some movies based in CGI can look so stupid and over the top (Indiana Jones 3, Pirates 3, etc.) and other like this seem to make it work without looking so cheesy?

Marky Abberton

Marky Mark has firmed as favourite to play Bra Boy Koby Abberton in a feature film about the notorious surfing gang.

The film will be based on the Bra Boys documentary, which tells the story of the Abberton brothers and the formation of the Maroubra-based surf gang.

“Mark is a great choice because he looks so much like Koby,” the insider said. “The biggest concern for everyone was the fact Koby has such a broad Aussie accent, but apparently Mark has nailed it.”

Universal Pictures bought the rights last year to the film, with Russell Crowe as its biggest supporter. The Oscar-winning actor is tipped to direct the film and is reportedly keen to play Sydney standover man Anthony Hines, who was shot dead in self defence by Jai Abberton in 2003.

Koby was found guilty of lying to police to cover up the shooting.

He is now facing a trial for the alleged assault of an off-duty policeman in Hawaii.

Spike Jonze intro for Lakai's Fully Flared

Fully Flared Intro

Wow is Spike Jonze rad. Looks like this has been floating around for a few months, but it’s new to me, so maybe it’s new to you.

Shows what you can do with some skateboards, a creative mind and a big budget.

Out There: Sneak Peak

Teton Gravity Research (TGR) presents OUT THERE, a 16mm and HiDef film taking a progressive, fresh look at what faces the surf world today. Humankind threatens many pristine and favorite surf breaks and surfers need to take action.

In partnership with the Surfrider Foundation, TGR’s OUT THERE takes viewers to a variety of breaks around the world, showcasing the cutting edge surfing of today. Through the eyes and experiences of surfers and locals, the film takes a thought-provoking look into the environmental destruction threatening key surf spots such as Trestles in Southern California, surf in Southern Chile threatened by pulp mills, Teahupoo and its growing popularity, mainland Mexico, North Shore Hawaii near the Turtle Bay development and beyond.

The world premiere is May 20th in Newport Beach.

Movie Review - Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Went to see the new Judd Apatow produced flick Forgetting Sarah Marshall the other night, and like all of Apatow’s previous movies (40 Year Old Virgin, SuperBad, Knocked up, Anchorman…) I really liked it. I thought it was again, surprisingly funny, very well written and acted, and over-all totally enjoyable. There were some surprise cameos by by Kalani Robb playing a waiter, and Kala Alexander basically playing himself.

There’s just something about the way Apatow and his posse of comedy writers present everyday situations and “real” conversations that make his films unique and hilarious.

I thought so anyway. The other 7 people in the theatre weren’t laughing as much.

The only thing that bothers me is the “I Hate Sarah Marshall” billboards and ad campaign they’re using. Being a Philadelphia native, it’s obvious to me that they totally ripped of the Stephen Singer Jewelers ad campaign and billboards.

Overall, I'm gonna give it 4.5 out of 5 drops.

Drive Thru New Zealand Trailer

Finally, we get to see the much anticipated (by me) trailer for Drive Thru New Zealand. Next month I’ll be embarking on my own little Drive Thru New Zealand (except by myself instead of with Occy and Benji), and this DVD can’t come out soon enough for me. Really looking forward to it.

Release Date: Mid-April 2008(?)

Bra Boys Review

Well I finally got to see Bra Boys last night, and it was pretty good. I have to admit, I was really ignorant to the whole scene they have going down there in Maroubra, Australia. I had no idea about the whole gang scene in Australia at all. They’re quite a territorial bunch aren’t they.

The lifestyle the Bra Boys live is so different from my reality that it’s just a little shocking. There’s so much fighting and violence surrounding their lives, it’s insane. Fortunately, there’s also a lot of surfing in their lives (I wish there was a bit more in the film). I knew Koby Abberton was a ripper, but I’d never seen Sunny or Jai surf, and they kill it too. I’ve also seen Mark Matthews surf a few times in contests, and he rips too. I didn’t know he was a Bra Boy or such a big wave charger.

I’m going to Australia next month for the first time, and it doesn’t look like I’ll be surfing Ours (watch this vid to get an idea of how big these guys balls are). It also doesn’t look like I’ll be dropping in on anyone, anywhere Down Under, at all.

Anyway, the movie was good, although I found it all pretty depressing. I like to pretend that there isn’t this much violence and aggression in the surfing world. But I was glued to the screen the whole time (except for when I closed my eyes because I was going to throw up from the neck-puncture wound shot) and if you like watching surfing and people getting the shit kicked out of them, you should go see this film because there’s a lot of both.

Overall, I'm gonna give it 4 out of 5 drops.

Drive-Thru New Zealand

I can’t wait for Drive-Thru New Zealand. I also can’t find a release date. The ad came out in the mags this month, and Transworld Surf has this photo gallery, but there’s no info on the 14 day Productions or Poor Specimen websites.

Butt, there are more photos (including this gem of Pat O’s ass) and info on Alex Gray’s Blog, where he calls it “the best trip of my life!!!”.

New Zealand has always been the dream trip I haven’t taken yet, and I’m planning on this video pushing me over the edge and into an Air New Zealand seat.

Does anybody know when the release date is?

Sea Fever

Just watched the preview for this Irish surf film Sea Fever and I think it looks pretty cool. They have some pretty epic big wave footage from over there.

From their website:
Sea Fever is an insight film into the surf culture that has developed in Ireland over the last forty years. With dramatic footage from Ireland’s giant wave “Aileen’s” (Aill na Searrach) at the 700 feet Cliffs of Moher and close-up interviews with the troubadour surfers that brave these 40 – 50 foot waves, to Kevin Cavey and the early pioneers of the 1960’s and 70’s with their rudimentary equipment and spirit of adventure.

Sea Fever $25.99
