Done Searching?

Well judging by the message board chatter, it seems like it is all but publicly announced that The Rip Curl Pro Search contest is landing at Uluwatu this year.

If that is the case, who do you think that favorites are?

If Rizal gets a wildcard, is there any reason he should lose? He owns that place.

Is Uluwatu really “searching”? It’s not exactly an unknown location.

Thoughts?

Somehow it just doesn’t really feel like they Searched all that hard to land at Ulus. Regardless, big or small it will be a great venue and unless the webcast is horrible I’m sure I won’t miss any of the action. I guess I’m just feeling like the Mexico Search Contest was just such a surprise venue. Chile was great but a little strange and unless you’ve been completely tuned out from the magazines growing up, or your 13 years old, you’ll have seen or surfed Ulu’s. The Bells webcast was disappointing so lets hope RipCurl gets it right in Indo.

Unfair as it may be to the Rizal or the other locals, Rob Machado is currently living on Bali and there may be a push to see him in the contest. I’d like to see his approach to that left hander but there’s a ton of amazing locals that know that place inside and out. Let’s see if Rizal’s fearless attack can make it through the trials.

As someone relatively new to surfing (4 years and counting), I’ve yet to see a contest at big Uluwatu. I’ve taken 2 surf pilgrimages to the bukit and surfed it both times in the 2 to 3 foot range. IMHO I’d love to see a good contest there and re: Rizal, I’d definitely like to see him go up against the heavies, at his home spot.

As for the idea that it isn’t much of search, they need a down/easy year or two, so that they can come back and kill it with another hidden gem (like barra). Plus Bali can always use more international attention, the economy is still very much in a downturn there (for obvious reasons) and the locals would be the first to say they miss the gringos out in the lineup.
