Billabong Pro J-Bay - 7:15am start...
Or so it says on the website. That’s 10:15pm in Cali y’all, so get ready for a late night of some hot man-on-man action. This swell has been hyped since last week, so hopefully all the predictions will be right, and it will be firing.
Stay tuned…

Billabong Pro J-Bay
The Billabong Pro at J-Bay starts this Thursday the 10th, so make sure to get your Fantasy Surfer team locked-in. The heat draw is now up right here. The wildcards aren’t set yet, that will be decided by the results of the Von Zipper Trials right before the event.
Unfortunately for us in California, this is the contest that doesn’t start until around 11p.m. PST, and since I’m old and usually in bed by then, it makes it kind of a bummer. Hopefully they will have the “Heats on Demand” system working.

Nike 6.0 Lowers
The Nike 6.0 Lowers contest is on again today. There was some great action yesterday, and the swell is a little bit bigger today (sets look like SO much fun!), so there should be a lot of shredding going on.
Check it out live right now:

Volcom is still trying to give you $10,000
There is still no winner for Volcom’s $10,000 kickflip-off. What are you waiting for?
If you haven’t heard about the contest, Volcom is giving $10,000 to the first person to produce video of themselves cleanly pulling off a “proper, above-the-lip” kickflip on a surfboard.
The contest began on November 21 and will run until a winner is produced. Volcom has set up a YouTube channel for people to upload their videos, and you can view everyone’s failed attemps.
Check out this Volcom page for more rules and details.
P.S. – watch out for those fins!

THE KING
Slater wins again. Plenty of coverage elsewhere.
How was that huge critical double-grab air right when he needed it?
Amazing.

Rip Curl Pro - Bells - Round 3
Slater was absolutely on FIRE in his heat. Unfortunately, after the contest moved location to Winkipop, all we got was a camera angle of the back of the wave, and it SUCKED!
Dane Reynolds scored the highest heat total of the contest, and then Slater blew up against Jihad Kodor, and we pretty much missed it all. I don’t understand why they couldn’t even pull together a jetski sorry SEA-DOO camera angle from the inside.
But, if you go to the contest site, and click on the Vividas Stream (only works on Firefox on my Mac), and then go to the Round 3 Wrap Show, it’s actually got good highlight clips that show a few waves from Kelly and Dane’s heats from the front.
There’s only one more day of competition left, so depending on Mother Nature, it could wrap up today.

Rip Curl Pro - Bells

Contest was really good yesterday. Big sloppy challenging waves. Plenty of coverage out there if you missed it.
Also, on the contest site, you can re-watch any of the heats ON DEMAND. Which is great.

Slater in at Bells
Slater Ready to Ring the Bell at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.
Slater officially withdrew from the event late last week but had a change of heart after seeing the swell forecast for the March 18-29 waiting period. He arrived in Australia today. “A combination of things influenced my decision to come to Bells,” Slater said. “I had called ASP Tour Manager Renato Hickel to ask to be officially taken out of the event and that is when he asked me if I had seen the swell forecast.”
Current forecasts indicate that a new swell could see the event start early in the waiting period and that Easter Friday is poised to produce six to eight foot waves akin to the classic Bells Beach conditions Slater won the 2006 Rip Curl Pro in.
“I was also checking out some media online and I came across some video interviews that the Geelong Advertiser had done with the locals about whether or not I would come,” Slater said. “There were some pretty strong responses about wanting to see me there. So that, the swell and some changes in my personal life and suddenly it was perfect timing for me to get away. All the signs pointed this direction so it seemed like the thing to do.”
It seemed like the thing to do in 2006 too. Slater was in an identical predicament in the 2006 lead up to the event as he was prior to this one – a win in the season-opener, a world No. 1 rating to start the year and serious indecision about whether to attend the event or not. Slater won the Rip Curl Pro and his eighth ASP title that year.
“The decision to come was a little more clear this year,” Slater said. “In 2006 I decided to come at the last minute to get my mind off some personal things and to get a little more focused. This year, the similarities to 2006 are the excitement of a looming swell and a great week of surfing I want to be a part of.”
Slater will face Brazil’s Adriano de Souza and wildcard and former ASP World Tour surfer Troy Brooks in Heat 10.

Chris Ward Withdraws from First Event of 2008
ASP World Tour surfer Chris Ward (USA) has relinquished his spot in the first event of the year, the 2008 Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, to replacement surfer Nic Muscroft (AUS).
Ward, who is currently facing criminal charges after an alleged altercation outside of a bar in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. last month, will not surf the season opener, but plans to compete at the second event on the 2008 tour in Bells Beach, Australia in March. He is also slated to surf in two events of the upcoming Australian leg of the ASP’s World Qualifying Series (WQS).
As per the original statement released last month, the ASP has investigated the matter and will await the outcome of the court case before making any decisions on Ward’s eligibility to compete on tour. At present, no court dates have been set.

Final Day of the Monster Energy Pro
With today being the final day of the waiting period, all remaining heats will run in less than ideal conditions. It’s been raining like crazy in Hawaii, so the conditions have been crap, but regardless, it’s still worth watching everyone completely rip the shit out of the waves they do get.

Quiksilver Revolution 2.0
Sunway Lagoon, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. 26 January, 2008.
Malaysia’s land-locked city of Kuala Lumpur is about to get a blast of boarding culture with the upcoming Quiksilver Revolution 2.0 bringing an international line-up of surfers and skaters to its chlorinated shores.
At a huge 18,000 square feet (1,672 square metres), the man-made surf pool at Sunway Lagoon resort theme-park in the heart of city, is the largest in the world and the perfectly shaped waves it produces has attracted five of the world’s most talented surfers to take part in a surfing display.
On January 26, aerial specialist Ry Craike (Kalbarri, West Australia), top-ranked professionals Troy Brooks (Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia) and Josh Kerr (Snapper Rocks, Queensland, Australia) will be joined by Peurto Rican hotshot Dylan Graves and Indonesian star Wayan ‘Betet’ Merta (Bali, Indonesia) as they give a futuristic surfing demonstration to an expected 30,000 curious landlocked fans.
