Shanna Gilfix

I’ll never understand the music industry. How do beautiful girls with voices and original songs like this not get a record deal? It’s amazing the crap that they try to force feed us, when girls like this go unheard of and singing in their trailer.

Quick, somebody with a record company give this girls a deal so I can download her album for free.

Van Halen - Zero

A friend just sent me a link to this gem hiding on the internets if you’re interested. Apparently, this is the 1976 Gene Simmons produced Van Halen demo that I never knew existed. You get to hear early versions of some hits like Runnin’ with the Devil, and _ On Fire_, but the cool thing for me is to hear the songs on there that I’ve never heard before. Check it out.

TRACK LISTING:
1) On Fire
2) Women in Love
3) House In Pain
4) Runnin’ with the Devil
5) She’s the Woman
6) Let’s Get Rockin’
7) Big Trouble
8) Somebody Get Me a Doctor
9) Babe, Don’t Leave Me Alone
10) Put Out the Lights

The Raconteurs

I’m really digging the new Raconteurs album Consolers of the Lonely. It’s super-good, and Jack White is super-talented. If you don’t have it, and you’re a fan of good music, you should definitely get it. You can either buy it or maybe even find it somewhere for free. I’ll leave it up to you.

Check it out and us me know what you think.

NIN - The Slip

Check it out. You can download the new Nine Inch Nails album for FREE. And unlike the last free NIN album we told you about, this one actually has vocals.

It’s amazing how fast Trent is kicking out albums. Making brilliant noise seems pretty easy for him at this point.

Flight of the Conchords New Album

Flight of the Conchords show on HBO was pretty good. I say pretty good because the storyline got old fast, but parts of the show were really funny. My favorite part was always the music though. Not only are the lyrics really funny, but the songs are also just really good songs.

They just released their first full-length album last week, and I like it a lot. You can listen to all of the songs on their myspace page, you can buy it from iTunes, or you can steal the album for free here if you have no morals.

Definitely check it out one way or another.

Overall, I'm gonna give it 4.5 out of 5 drops.

NIN - Ghosts I-IV = $$$ + :-) for Trent Reznor

We told you about the new NIN album that Trent Reznor self-released about 2 weeks ago. Well it looks like Trent’s experiment worked. He made $1,619,420 the first week (and none of that goes to a record company).

The album, released on March 2nd in a multitude of different formats at nin.com, “immediately sold out” of its run of 2,500 “Ultra-Deluxe Limited Edition” versions (complete with vinyl, deluxe packaging and a Reznor autograph), with a $300 price tag.

In all, 781,917 transactions were made for the album, with people either downloading a quarter of the album for free, downloading the entire album for $5, purchasing a physical copy for $10 or getting the non-ultra-deluxe limited edition version for $75.

Unlike Radiohead, who have still not released the total numbers and dollar figures from their In Rainbows experiment, Reznor likely revealed his first-week stats as a way to show fellow artists in the same weight class how successful they can be without the help of a major label. We’re sure Reznor and Thom Yorke will have a nice laugh about all this if they do in fact headline Lollapalooza. Ghosts I-IV is still available for download on NIN’s site, with double-CD sets due in stores on April 8th.

Tommy Guerrero - Return of the Bastard

Legendary Bones Brigade skater Tommy Guerrero has just dropped his new album, and it sounds pretty good. It’s a mellow mix of skatey, surfey, cruisey tunes that are mostly instrumental, and totally enjoyable.

If you’re not familiar with Tommy’s music, check out his MySpace page, or his website for some samples. If you’re not familiar with Tommy’s skating, you can check out my favorite scene from the 1985 Bones Brigade video Future Primitive by clicking right HERE. I’ve always wanted to skate like Tommy in this scene, but unfortunately, I’m too old now, my back hurts, and I can barely ollie up a curb.

The Evens

I’m a HUGE Fugazi fan. I think they’re one of the most under-appreciated bands ever, and they’re probably #3 on my list of all-time favorites, so I’m embarrassed to say that I just found out about The Evens. They’re the newest band that Fugazi (and Minor Threat) frontman Ian Mackaye is a part of.

The music is way mellow, but it still has the completely original sounding arrangements that Fugazi was famous for. The band is just Ian and a girl named Amy Farina who plays drums and sings (like the White Stripes, without sounding at all like the White Stripes), and the songs are pretty lo-fi with just drums and Ian playing baritone acoustic guitar.

So, if you were a fan of Fugazi (and you’ve been living under a rock like I apparently have) you should definitely check out some of their songs on their “unofficial” Myspace page, let me know what you think.

NIN - Ghosts I-IV

If you’re a NIN fan like I am, you’ll be happy to know Trent Reznor just dropped a surprise new 36-track instrumental album called Ghosts I-IV, and you can download the first 9 songs for free if you go here

The whole album is available in various packages: a $5 download, $10 for a 2-CD set, $75 deluxe edition, or $300 ultra-deluxe limited edition package which includes a hardcover fabric slipcase containing 2 audio CDs, 1 data DVD with all 36 tracks in multi-track format, and a Blu-ray disc with Ghosts I-IV in high-definition 96/24 stereo and accompanying slideshow, along with an exclusive four-LP 180 gram vinyl set in a fabric slipcase, and two exclusive limited edition Giclee prints in a luxurious package. It’s limited to 2500 pieces, and it’s numbered and signed by Trent Reznor. Jeez.

I just downloaded the first 9 songs, but the file won’t unzip and it’s frustrating.

Vampire Weekend

This band has been blowing up all over the blogs and FUELtv, and now I know why. I just got the album, and it’s really really good. I’m mostly a metalhead, but I really appreciate any band that is doing something different in an industry filled with sameness, and these guys sound a little different. I say a little, because it reminds me of some modernized 80’s stuff, like Men At Work or something, but whatever, the 80’s are so hot right now anyway.

Check ‘em out if you already haven’t:

Do You Like FREE MP3's?

If you’re into HEAVY music like Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath, Wolfmother and other stuff like that, Stonerrock.com is seriously awesome. They have thousands of Free mp3’s right here to listen to and download. For you audiophiles, yeah, some of the sound quality is lacking a bit, but hey, they’re free.

Mad Caddies

Leavin'

Add to My Profile | More Videos

Here’s a Mad Caddies video just because I like them so much. I’m still really surprised they’ve never gotten more popular. Maybe I just feel attached to them because of my Santa Barbara roots, but still, there so much better than most of the other shit they play on the radio now-a-days.

When I first saw them they were called The Ivy League, and most of them were still in high school, and I think there were like 12 of them on stage. I forget who they were opening for, but I thought they were great. Now it’s like 10 years later, and I still think they’re great.

So, If you’ve never really listened to them, check ‘em out. They’re fun, and talented, and they deserve more money than they make.
